Ethical Jungle Trekking Guidelines
Bukit Lawang is home to one of the world’s last remaining populations of wild Sumatran orangutans and lies on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park. Every visitor has a responsibility to help protect this unique ecosystem.
1. Respect Wildlife
- Observe animals from a safe distance.
- Never touch, feed, or attempt to attract wildlife.
- Keep noise to a minimum to avoid disturbing animals.
- Do not use flash photography around wildlife.
- Follow your guide’s instructions at all times.
2. Protect Orangutans
- Never approach orangutans, even if they come close to you.
- Do not eat near orangutans or leave food unattended.
- If you are feeling sick (especially with a cold, flu, or other contagious illness), postpone your trek to avoid transmitting diseases to great apes.
- Never encourage interactions for photos or social media.
3. Leave No Trace
- Take all rubbish back with you, including food scraps and biodegradable waste.
- Avoid using single-use plastics whenever possible.
- Stay on designated trails to prevent erosion and protect vegetation.
- Do not pick plants or remove natural objects from the forest.
4. Respect Local Communities
- Be courteous and respectful toward local people and their customs.
- Ask permission before photographing individuals.
- Support locally owned businesses, guides, and accommodations whenever possible.
- Respect cultural traditions and dress appropriately in villages.
5. Minimize Your Environmental Impact
- Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it when possible.
- Use environmentally friendly sunscreen and insect repellent.
- Avoid unnecessary campfires.
- Use water responsibly.
6. Follow Park Regulations
- Enter the park only with authorized guides.
- Respect all protected area rules and conservation measures.
- Do not bring pets into the national park.
- Report any illegal activities, such as wildlife feeding, poaching, or littering, to your guide or park authorities.
7. Be a Responsible Trekker
- Walk carefully to avoid damaging plants and wildlife habitat.
- Keep group sizes small whenever possible to reduce disturbance.
- Be patient and enjoy wildlife observation without chasing or crowding animals.
- Remember that seeing wildlife is a privilege, not a guarantee.
