We had Mawan and Fari guiding us through the jungle and they were incredibly patient, allowing us to hike at a pace that worked for us. The jungle is SO SO hot and humid so we appreciated be able to take breaks when needed.

The food was also delicious!! Honestly some of the best we’ve had in Indonesia. And of course, seeing the orangutans was obviously the highlight. We saw them about 1 hour into our hike on day 1 which was crazy!

We spent 3N4D trekking through the jungle, encountering various species: primates (Sumatran orangutans, Thomas’s leaf monkeys, siamangs, white-handed gibbons, macaques), also birds and reptiles (rhinoceros hornbills, snakes, tortoises, monitor lizards). These encounters are completely wild and respectful; they’re not guaranteed, and that’s what makes it unique.

The guides, Pele and Habibi, demonstrated a wealth of knowledge about the jungle and animal behavior; we felt safe and they explained so many interesting things to us 10/10. They adapt to our pace, wait patiently and take the time needed so that we can enjoy the moment.

Every day we moved to a new campsite, near a river or waterfall where we could cool off. Chef Barjan prepared all the meals and they were delicious; he was very dedicated and kind.

Sumatra Tour Adventures is an amazing Organisation with an amazing host and excellent guides. It was super easy to communicate with Tondi and he was really helpful. We booked the 3D2N Jungle Trek. The Jungle Trek itself was just mind blowing. We saw Orang Utans, Gibbons, Thomas Leaf Monkeys, Makakes and sooooo much more. Our guide team was educational and very professional and super friendly with amazing English skills. We felt safe the whole time, so we could fully enjoy the wildlife and learn something. We got fresh fruits and freshly cooked meals including breakfast. It is a lot of hiking and climbing up and down but if you want to see wildlife that’s where you have to go. The camps were basic but we had everything we needing including blankets and mosquito nets. Tondi and his team took care of us in the best way. We had a pickup from the airport, a place to stay before and after the trek (I would recommend to at least book a night before the trek!) and Tondi even showed me around the village on his scooter and helped whenever we needed something. This was truly the best experience, I couldn’t ask for more. You can tell that they love the nature and their job. For me it was important to support a local company with sustainable methods and Sumatra Tour Adventures perfectly combines these two things. I would to it over and over again and I would book with Sumatra Tour Adventures and Tondi every time. It was an unforgettable experience! From our arrival to the end, everything was very well organized and we felt very comfortable throughout. Tondi gave us a warm welcome and our guides were very nice and attentive. They addressed all of our needs and always helped us with difficult sections during the trek. The trek itself was very exciting; we were able to observe several orangutans as well as other monkey species. The camps where we slept were adventurous and always next to a river where you could refresh yourself after the hike. The food was also top-notch, including the vegetarian option. I had one of the best days of my life! The organization was very good and everything worked out wonderfully. We saw many different animals; the orangutans were especially good. The guides showed us everything and were very attentive. They also provided help during the sometimes strenuous hiking and catered to our needs. They were especially accommodating to our vegetarian diet and cooked us great food. The sleeping accommodations were clean and adventurous; you only see something like that in the jungle. Booked with Tondi for a 3D2N Orang Utan Trekking Expedition. Dino and Habibi was our guides and Barjan was our camp chef and caretaker. They took great care of us. They brought us to the hotspots of the Orang Utans, Thomas’ Leaf monkeys and white-headed gibbons, made sure we had good viewing spots, checked if we were okay and if we needed breaks, and even helped us to carry some of our stuff across the rivers. They also set up our sleeping area for us nicely and also made sure we were fed! It was a truly wonderful experience in the jungle and we felt so well taken care of. Thankful to the team!

1. Where is Bukit Lawang?

Bukit Lawang is a small village in North Sumatra, Indonesia, located on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park. It is one of the most popular places to experience jungle trekking and observe Sumatran orangutans in their natural habitat.

2. What animals can I see during the trek?

The main attraction is the Sumatran orangutan. Depending on luck and season, you may also encounter Thomas leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, gibbons, hornbills, monitor lizards, butterflies, and many other species.
Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed because the animals are free in their natural habitat.

3. Is it guaranteed that I will see an orangutan?

No. Orangutans are wild animals, so sightings can never be guaranteed.
Your guide will look for signs of wildlife and choose suitable trails, but nature is unpredictable. This is part of the experience of visiting a real rainforest rather than a zoo.

4. What should I bring for the trek?

We recommend bringing:

Comfortable trekking shoes or sandals with good grip, Lightweight and breathable clothes, Rain jacket or poncho, Reusable water bottle, Small backpack, Insect repellent, Sunscreen, Hat, Personal medication, Camera or phone, Extra clothes for longer treks For overnight trips, your guide or trekking operator can advise you about additional equipment.

5. Can children join the trekking?

Yes, children can join some trekking routes, but the appropriate route depends on their age, fitness, and hiking experience. For young children, we recommend discussing the trek with your guide in advance so the route and duration can be adjusted accordingly.

6. Do I need to book the trek in advance?

Booking in advance is recommended, especially during busy travel periods.
It allows the guide or operator to prepare the appropriate route, guide, meals, equipment, and accommodation for you.

7. What if I have never done jungle trekking before?

That’s absolutely fine!
Many visitors to Bukit Lawang are first-time jungle trekkers. Tell us about your fitness level and previous hiking experience so the trek can be adjusted to your abilities.
